Questions
Section A
- Q(a). What is free body diagram. Give its role in finding the solution of problems in Mechanics. [2 marks]
- Q(b). What is Varignon theorem? How it is related to center of gravity of the body? [2 marks]
- Q(c). What is Angle of Repose? How it is related to the angle of plane at which the body resides. [2 marks]
- Q(d). Define coefficient of restitution. Give its range of variations. [2 marks]
- Q(e). Projectile motion is a special case of curvilinear motion. Validate the statement. [2 marks]
- Q(f). What is Impulse? How it is related to momentum? [2 marks]
Section B
Attempt any two questions
- QQ1. The striker of a carom board laying on the board is being pulled by four players as shown in Figure 1. The players are sitting exactly at the centre of the four sides. Determine the resultant of forces in magnitude and direction. [12 marks]
- QQ2. Two blocks of weight 200N and 300N connected by a string passing over a frictionless pulley rest on rough surfaces: block of weight 200N on horizontal surface and the other on an inclined surface as shown in figure 2. For both surfaces coefficient of friction is 0.25. Find out the minimum value of force both in magnitude and direction, for the motion to impend. [12 marks]
- QQ3. Calculate the forces in all the members of the given truss shown in Figure 3 [12 marks]
Section C
Attempt any two questions
- QQ1. Motion of the particle along a straight line is defined by $v^3 = 64s^2$, where v is in m/s and s is in m. Determine the (i) Velocity when distance covered is 8 m, (ii) Acceleration when distance covered is 27 m and (iii) Acceleration when the velocity is $9\text{ m/s}^2$. [12 marks]
- QQ2. Two blocks A and B having mass of 8 kg and 15 kg are attached to the ends of a cord which passes over a 4 kg pulley, as shown in Figure. If the blocks are released from rest, determine the speed of the block A after 3 sec. Assume the pulley to be a disk and no slipping of the cord over the pulley. [12 marks]
- QQ3. A 1 kg ball transverses a frictionless tube, as shown in Figure 5. Falling through a height of 1.5 m it then strikes a 2 kg ball hung on a rope 1.5 m long. Determine the height to which the hung ball will rise if (a) the collision is perfectly elastic and (b) the coefficient of restitution is 0.7. [12 marks]
