Instructions
- There shall be total eight questions, four from each section.
- Five questions will have to be attempted selecting at least two question from each section.
- Use of calculator is allowed.
Questions
SECTION - A
- Q1. A pipe P is being bent by the pipe bender as shown. If the hydraulic cylinder applies a force of magnitude kN to the pipe at C, Determine the magnitude of the roller reactions at A and B.
- Q2. The truss is composed of equilateral triangles and supports the load L. Determine the forces in members CG and GF. Using Method of Section.
- Q3. The tongs are designed to handle hot steel tubes which are being heat-treated in an oil bath. For a jaw opening, what is the minimum coefficient of static friction between the jaws and the tube which will enable the tongs to grip the tube without slipping?
- Q4. Calculate the Moment of Inertia & Product of inertia of given Z section about the given centroidal axis. Also find the angle \(\theta\) defining the direction of principal axes through the centroid and principal moment of inertia.
SECTION - B
- Q5. Determine the equation for the envelope of the parabolic trajectories of a particle at affixed velocity but at any inclination as shown in figure. Neglect the drag force of air and assume a constant value of gravitational acceleration.
- Q6. A box of mass M is kept on trolley deck moving at constant acceleration as shown in figure. Friction being active, Determine the (i) Expression for acceleration at slipping of the box (ii) Expression for tipping of the box about the point P.
- Q7. The pilot of an airplane weighing 40850 kg. Originally flying horizontally at a speed of 650 kmph cuts off all engine power and enters a glide path as shown in figure where \(\beta = 5.6^{\circ}\). After two minutes the airspeed of the plane gets reduced to 580 kmph. Determine the magnitude of the time averaged drag force.
- Q8. In the mechanism shown in figure. Determine the uniform speed to the lift the weight Q, which can slide freely along the vertical shaft. Take mg = 60N, Q = 120 N, L = 25 cm.
