- Duration: 180 minutes
- Total marks: 100
Instructions
- Attempt five questions in all, selecting at least two questions from each section.
- All questions carry equal marks.
- Assume missing data suitably, if any.
Questions
SECTION-A
- Q1. The resultant of two forces $P$ and $Q$ acting at a point is $R$. The resultant $R$ gets doubled when $Q$ is either doubled or its direction is reversed. Show that $P$, $Q$ and $R$ conform to the ratio $P : Q : R = \sqrt{2} : \sqrt{3} : \sqrt{2}$
- Q2. An effort of $200\text{ N}$ is required just to move a certain body up an inclined plane of angle $15^\circ$, the force acting parallel to the plane. If the angle of inclination of the plane is made $20^\circ$, the effort required, again applied parallel to the plane, is found to be $230\text{ N}$. Find the weight of the body and the co-efficient of friction.
- Q3. Determine the coordinates of the centroid of given area OAB if the curve OB is expressed by the equation $y = kx^2$ where OA = 6 units and AB = 4 units.
- Q4. Determine the forces in the various members of the truss.
SECTION-B
- Q5. A train is travelling on a curved path of radius $1000\text{ m}$ at a speed of $90\text{ km/hr}$. The brakes are suddenly applied causing the train to slow down at a constant rate. After 6 seconds, the speed has been reduced to $72\text{ km/hr}$. Determine the magnitude and direction of acceleration of a train immediately after the brakes have been applied.
- Q6. A helicopter flying horizontally at $80\text{ km/hr}$ and at height of $500\text{ m}$ intends to bomb a target on the ground. At what distance from the target should the bomb be released in order to hit the target? Also find the magnitude and direction of velocity with which bomb hits the target?
- Q7. Two bodies of weight $10\text{ N}$ and $1.5\text{ N}$ are connected to the two ends of a light inextensible string, passing over a smooth pulley. The weight $10\text{ N}$ is placed on a rough horizontal surface while the weight of $1.5\text{ N}$ is hanging vertically in air. Initially the friction between the weight $10\text{ N}$ and the table is just sufficient to prevent motion. If an additional weight of $0.5\text{ N}$ is added to the weight $1.5\text{ N}$, determine: (a) Acceleration of the two weights, and (b) Tension in the string after adding additional weight of $0.5\text{ N}$ to the weight $1.5\text{ N}$. Take $g = 9.80\text{ m/s}^2$.
- Q8. A train of weight $1500\text{ kN}$, is ascending (i.e., going upwards) a slope of 1 in 100 with a uniform speed of $36\text{ km/hr}$. Find the power exerted by the engine, if the road offers a resistance of $5\text{ N} / \text{kN}$ weight of the train.
