Questions
Section-A
Select at least two questions from this section.
- Q1. A beam ABCDE of total length 18 m is supported and loaded as shown in figure 1. Draw the Shear force and bending momemt diagrams. Locate the points of Zero Shear force and Bending moments : [20 marks]
- Q2. A given section of a uniform I beam as shown in figure 2 is subjected to a shear force of 120 kN. Plot the shear stress distribution diagram for the section and determine the ratio of the maximum shear stress to the mean shear stress : [20 marks]
- Q3. A block of stone of uniform thickness measures 1 m square in plan and weighs 24 kN. A vertical crane rope is connected to the top of the block at the point P, off the centre as shown in figure 3. The pull in the crane rope is just sufficient to reduce the pressure under the stone to zero at corner E. Find the pull in the rope and the pressure under the other three corners : [20 marks]
- Q4. A 3 m long cantilever of uniform rectangular cross-section, 15 cm wide and 30 cm deep, is loaded with a 36 kN load at its free end. In addition to this, it carries a udl of 22 kN/m run over its entire length. Calculate (a) maximum slope and maximum deflection and (b) the slope and deflection at 2.2 m from the fixed end. Take E = 210 GN/m^2. [20 marks]
Section-B
Select at least two questions from this section.
- Q5. The intensity of resultant stress on a plane AB as shown in figure 4 at appoint in a material under stress is 88 MN/m^2 (Tensile) inclined at 30° to the normal to that plane. The normal component of stress on another plane BC at right angles to plane AB is 65 MN/m^2. Determine (i) the resultant stress on the plane BC, (ii) the principal stresses and principal planes, (iii) the maximum shear stress and its plane : [20 marks]
- Q6. Determine the section of a hollow 5 m long cast iron column with ends built in, if it carries an axial load of 750 kN. The ration of internal to external diameter is 3/4. Factor of safety = 2.5, \(\sigma_c = 56.5\text{ kN/cm}^2\) and 1/a = 1/1600. [20 marks]
- Q7. (a) Derive the equation of Torsion for circular shaft. (b) A hollow steel shaft with a length of 1.8 m is loaded by a torque of 7.5 kNm. Determine the external and internal diameter of the shaft, if the angle of twist is not to exceed 2°, and the shear stress is not to exced 7 kN/cm^2. The modulus of rigidity of steel is 8 MN/cm^2. [12 marks]
- Q8. (a) A cylinder consists of an outer tube of internal and external diameter 16 cm and 18 cm respectively shrunk onto an inner tube of internal and external diameter 8 cm and 16.01 cm respectively. The internal pressure developed in the cylinder is 300 MPa. If E = 200 GPa, find the maximum hoop stress developed in each case. (b) A cylindrical shell 3.25 m long and 1 m in diameter; 1 cm thickness of the metal is subjected to an internal pressure of 100 N/cm^2. Calculate the longitudinal and circumferential stresses, change in diameter and in length if E = 20 × 10^6 N/cm^2 and Poisson ratio = 0.3. [20 marks]
