- Assume missing data suitably, if any.
Questions
Section-A
- Q1. A beam $8.5\text{ m}$ long rests on supports $5\text{ m}$ apart, the right hand end overhanging its support by $2\text{ m}$ and the left hand by $1.5\text{ m}$ and loaded as shown in figure 1. Draw the Shear force and bending moment diagrams. State the positions of the points of inflexion on the beam. [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) A $150\text{ mm} \times 300\text{ mm}$ deep timber beam has two $125\text{ mm} \times 12\text{ mm}$ steel plates each bolted to it as shown in Figure 2. Assuming the safe steel stress as $140\text{ N/mm}^2$, the safe timber stress as $7\text{ N/mm}^2$, E for steel as $210\text{ GN/m}^2$ and E for timber $8.4210\text{ GN/m}^2$, calculate the moment of resistance of the beam. 12 (b) Derive the equation of simple bending. 8 [20 marks]
- Q3. A short C.I. column has a rectangular section $16\text{ cm} \times 20\text{ cm}$ with a circular hole of $8\text{ cm}$ diameter as shown in Figure 3. It carries an eccentric load of $10\text{ tonnes}$, located as shown in the figure. Determine the values of the stresses at the four corners of the section. [20 marks]
- Q4. Figure 4 shows a horizontal beam ABC of uniform flexural rigidity EI. The beam is simply supported at A and B. For the given loading, determine the deflection at the free end C. [20 marks]
Section-B
- Q5. A piece of material is subjected to three perpendicular stresses and the strains in the three directions are in the ratio $3 : 4 : 5$. If Poisson's ratio is $0.286$, find the ratio of stresses and their values if the greatest stress is $60\text{ N/mm}^2$. [20 marks]
- Q6. A hollow circular column of $5\text{ m}$ length, $20\text{ cm}$ external diameter and $14\text{ cm}$ internal diameter is fixed at both ends. It carries a load of $225\text{ kN}$ at an eccentricity of $1.5\text{ cm}$ from the axis of the column. Find the maximum stresses developed. What should be the limiting eccentricity if tension is not to develop ? Take $\text{E} = 9500\text{ kN/cm}^2$. [20 marks]
- Q7. A hollow shaft having an inside diameter that is $60\%$ of its outer diameter is to replace a solid shaft transmitting the same power at the same speed. Calculate the percentage saving in material if the material to be used is also the same. [20 marks]
- Q8. (a) Derive expressions to determine strains in a thin cylindrical shell due to internal pressure. 12 (b) A close coiled helical spring is to be made out of $5\text{ mm}$ diameter wire that is $2.0\text{ m}$ long so that it deflects by $20\text{ mm}$ under an axial load of $45\text{ kN}$. Determine the mean diameter of the coil. Take $\text{C} = 81\text{ GN/m}^2$. 8 [20 marks]
