Questions
SECTION-A
- Q1. (a) Differentiate semiconductors, conductors and insulators on the basis of band gap. What is the mechanism by which conduction takes place inside the semiconductor. (b) Find the conductivity of intrinsic germanium at 300K. If donor type impurity is added to the extent of 1 impurity atom in $10^7$ germanium atoms, find the conductivity. Given that $n_i$ at 300K is $2.5 \times 10^{13}/\text{cm}^3$ and $\mu_n$ and $\mu_p$ in germanium are 3800 and $1800 \text{ cm}^2/\text{V-S}$ respectively.
- Q2. (a) What is P-N Junction? Explain the action of P-N junction diode under forward bias and reverse bias. Draw V-I characteristics. (b) Explain the working and applications of a tunnel diode.
- Q3. (a) Explain the working of a full-wave rectifier using centre-tapped transformer. What is the PIV of this rectifier? (b) A half-wave rectifier uses a diode with an equivalent forward resistance of $0.3 \ \Omega$. If the input ac voltage is $10 \text{ V(rms)}$ and the load is a resistance of $2.0 \ \Omega$, calculate $I_{dc}$ and $I_{rms}$ in the load.
- Q4. (a) Explain the working of a simple capacitor filter for a half-wave rectifier and show the output voltage across the load. (b) Sketch a positive series clipping circuit. Give input and output waveforms and explain the operation of the circuit.
SECTION-B
- Q5. (a) Explain the function of emitter, base and collector in the operation of a junction transistor. (b) What are different ways of biasing a transistor? Which method of biasing is used for operating transistor as an amplifier?
- Q6. (a) Sketch the V-I characteristics of an NPN transistor in common emitter operation and indicate the different regions of importance. Explain also. (b) Draw the circuits of various transistor configurations and write the necessary current equations. List important features of the configurations.
- Q7. (a) What is modulation? Explain the need of modulation in a communication system. (b) Explain the radio-frequency spectrum used in communication system.
- Q8. Explain the following: (a) Analog and digital communication. (b) Bias Compensation techniques.
