Questions
SECTION - A
- Q1. (a) State fundamental postulates of the special theory of relativity and hence deduce the Lorentz Transformations. (b) A clock measures the proper time with what velocity it should travel relative to an observer so that it appears to go slow by 30 seconds in a day. (12, 8) [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) What is length contraction in special theory of relativity, deduce an expression in regard to the interval between two events measured from two different frames of reference. (b) Calculate the rest mass, relativistic mass and momentum of a photon of energy $5 \text{ eV}$. (12, 8) [20 marks]
- Q3. (a) What is Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Discuss how it explains the non existence of electron inside the nucleus. (b) An electron has a speed of $600 \text{ m/s}$ with an accuracy of $0.05\%$. Calculate the minimum uncertainty in the location of the electron. (12, 8) [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) What do you understand by balck body? Draw the typical curves to show how, the distribution of energy amongst various wavelengths varies with temperature. State Wein's Law and explain how colour of a black body changes with temperature. State Rayleigh-Jeans law and its implications. (b) The surface temperature of a hot body is $1227^{\circ}\text{C}$. Find the wave length at which it radiates maximum energy. (14, 6) [20 marks]
SECTION - B
- Q5. (a) Write Schroedinger wave equation for the particle in one dimensional box of infinite height and solve it to obtain the eigen values and eigen functions. How do the results differ from those expected from classical consideration? (b) A particle is described by a wave function $\Psi(x) = \frac{1 + ix}{1 + ix^2}$. Calculate the average value of the position of a particle. (12, 8) [20 marks]
- Q6. (a) Differentiate between classical and quantum mechanical explanation for reflection and transmission through a potential barrier. Hence explain what is tunneling? (b) Mobilities of electrons and holes in a sample of intrinsic germanium at room temperature are $0.54 \text{ m}^2\text{v}^{-1}\text{s}^{-1}$ and $0.18 \text{ m}^2\text{v}^{-1}\text{s}^{-1}$ resp. If the electron and hole densities are equal to $3.6 \times 10^{-19} \text{ m}^{-3}$, calculate the electrical conductivity of germanium. (14, 6) [20 marks]
- Q7. (a) What is Hall effect? Find expression for Hall coefficient and discuss its utility in semiconductor physics. (b) Write short note on (i) Smart materials (i) Dielectric materials. (14, 6) [20 marks]
- Q8. (a) Distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors. Show mathematically that, for an intrinsic semiconductor the Fermi level lies exactly halfway between the top of valence band and bottom of the conduction band. (b) Show that the sum of the reflection and transmission coefficients for a potential barrier of $E < V_0$ is 1. (12, 8) [20 marks]
