Study resources
- Virtual Labs - Welding: Principles and Classification (PDF) (PDF) — Government Virtual Labs lesson on the principle of welding and the full classification chart of welding processes. Read this before any welding experiment.
- Virtual Labs - Electric Arc Welding Process (PDF) (PDF) — Covers arc welding equipment, electrodes and polarity (DCSP vs DCRP) - needed for all four arc welding jobs in this unit.
- Virtual Labs - Gas Welding / Oxy-Acetylene Welding (PDF) (PDF) — Oxy-acetylene equipment and the three flame types (neutral, oxidising, carburising). Essential for the 'by gas welding' half of every job in this unit.
- NPTEL - Manufacturing Processes: Casting and Joining (Article) — Week 3 onwards covers joining processes, types of joints, weld metallurgy and welding defects. Free IIT lectures with video.
- SlideShare - Arc Welding Lab Manual (all joints) (Article) — A complete arc welding lab manual with Exercise 1 Single V-Butt joint, plus lap, corner and tee joints - aim, material sizes, tools, operations and procedure for each.
- Our E-Labs - Single 'V' Butt Joint (full experiment) (Article) — Indian lab manual page with plate size (80 x 40 x 6 mm MS), sequence of operations (marking, filing, welding, finishing), tools list and procedure. Almost a ready record entry.
- Single V-Butt Joint - Welding Workshop Practice (YouTube) (Video) — Indian workshop demonstration of edge preparation to a 60 degree included angle, root gap, tack welding and running the root and filler runs.
- Workshop Practice III - Welding: Single V Butt Joint (YouTube) (Video) — Second demonstration of the same job from a different institute - watch both so you can handle whichever electrode size and current your lab uses.
- How to do Arc Welding - Butt Joint (NEC Mech, YouTube) (Video) — Indian college welder shows striking the arc, maintaining arc length, chipping the slag and wire brushing. Good for the practical exam technique itself.
