Questions
Section-A
- Q1. Explain various types of solar cells based on material thickness and the type of junction structure? [15 marks]
- Q2. What do you understand by geothermal energy and geothermal fields? Explain the merits and demerits of geothermal energy? [15 marks]
- Q3. Sketch the diagram of a HAWT and explain the functions of its main components? [15 marks]
- Q4. (a) Describe the basic principle of operation of an MHD generator. What are the major advantages and limitations of MHD generating system? (b) With the help of schematic diagram explain the operation of open/closed cycle MHD generating system. [15 marks]
Section-B
- Q5. Explain the potentiometer method for measurement of resistance? [15 marks]
- Q6. Explain the principle, construction and types of moving iron instruments? [15 marks]
- Q7. Derive the formula for calculating the total power and power factor in a balanced three-phase system by two-wattmeter method? What does it indicate if one of the wattmeter readings is negative? [15 marks]
- Q8. A dynamometer-type wattmeter is used to measure the power consumed by a single-phase inductive load. The readings are as follows: Voltage across the load = 230 V Current through the load = 10 A Power factor of the load = 0.75 lagging Wattmeter has a 2.5% low reading error due to stray magnetic fields and friction Wattmeter constant = 600 revolutions per kWh Calculate: a) The actual power consumed by the load. b) The ideal wattmeter reading. c) The wattmeter reading with the 2.5% error applied. If the load runs for 5 hours, calculate the total energy consumed and the number of revolutions of the energy meter. [15 marks]
