Instructions
- Attempt Five questions in all, selecting at least two questions from each Section.
Questions
Section A
Attempt at least two questions from each Section.
- Q1. (a) Discuss the various static performance characteristics of an instrument. (b) Current was measured during a test as 20.5A, flowing in a resistor of $0.2\Omega$. It was found that the ammeter reading was low by $1.3\%$ while the resistance value was high by $0.5\%$. Find the magnitude of the true power and as a percentage of the power that was originally calculated. [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) Design an Ayrton shunt to provide an ammeter with current ranges of 1A, 5A and 10A. A d'Arsonval movement with an internal resistance $R_m = 50\Omega$ and full scale deflection current of 1mA is used in the configuration of Fig. 1. (b) Discuss the construction and working of a series and shunt type ohmmeter. [20 marks]
- Q3. (a) What is an A.C. voltmeter ? Explain the principle of operation of a full wave rectifier based A.C. voltmeter with proper diagrams. (b) What is a Wave Analyzer ? Draw and explain the functional block diagram of the Heterodyne Wave Analyzer. Discuss its various applications. [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) What is a Q meter ? With appropriate derivations discuss how the low and high impedance components are measured using Q meter. (b) Write short notes on any two of the following : (i) RF Milivoltmeter (ii) Temperature compensation in PMMC instruments (iii) True RMS responding voltmeter. [20 marks]
Section B
Attempt at least two questions from each Section.
- Q5. (a) Draw the block diagram of Time Base Generator of CRO and explain its principle of operation. (b) Explain how amplitude, frequency and phase measurements are done using CRO with necessary diagrams and equations. [20 marks]
- Q6. (a) What is the need of Digital Storage Oscilloscope ? Discuss its various modes of operation and its advantages. (b) What is LVDT ? Explain its construction and principle of operation. [20 marks]
- Q7. (a) Discuss the construction and working of Resistance Temperature Detector. What are its advantages and limitations ? (b) In a four arm bridge, the arm AB is imperfect condenser, BC and CD are non-reactive resistances of $1000\Omega$ each and DA is a standard capacitor of $0.0115\mu\text{F}$ in series with a resistance of $140\Omega$. If the bridge is balanced for $\omega = 7500\text{ rad/sec}$, find the shunt loss resistance and capacitance of imperfect condenser. [20 marks]
- Q8. (a) Discuss the various unbalance conditions in reference to A.C. bridges. (b) Discuss in brief any two of the following : (i) Limitations of conventional CRO at high frequencies (ii) Piezoelectric Transducer (iii) Screen of CRO. [20 marks]
