Questions
Section A
- Q1. (a) A 30 m chain was tested before a survey and found to have a length of 29.93 m. If the length of a line measured with this chain was 273.35 m, find the true length of the line. (5) (b) To continue a survey line past on obstacle in the form of pond, stations A and B on the main line were taken on opposite sides of the pond. A line AC, 315 m long was laid down on the left of AB, and a second line AD, 270 m long was laid down on the right of AB, the points C, B and D being in the same straight line. CB and BD were then measured and found to be 156 m and 174 m respectively. Find the length of AB. (8) (c) Write the classification of surveying and explain basic principles of surveying. (7) [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) A 30 m long steel tape is supported at the ends. Find the normal tension for the tape with the following data : Cross section of the tape = $4 \text{ mm}^2$. Weight of tape material = $0.0786 \text{ N/mm}^2$, $\text{E} = 200 \text{ GN/m}^2$, and the pull at which the tape is standardized is $100 \text{ N}$. (5) (b) Explain the following terms : (i) Vertical axis (ii) Line of collimation (iii) Face left observation (iv) Changing face (v) Transiting. (5) (c) Differentiate between the followings : (i) Cumulative and compensating errors (ii) Perpendicular and oblique offsets (iii) Direct and indirect method of chaining (iv) Linear and Angular measurements. (8) [18 marks]
- Q3. (a) Below are given the observed bearings of the lines of a traverse ABCDE with a compass in a place where local attraction was suspected. Find the correct bearings of the lines : | Line | Fore Bearing | Back Bearing | | :--- | :---: | :---: | | AB | $191^{\circ} 45'$ | $13^{\circ} 0'$ | | BC | $39^{\circ} 30'$ | $222^{\circ} 30'$ | | CD | $22^{\circ} 15'$ | $200^{\circ} 30'$ | | DE | $242^{\circ} 45'$ | $62^{\circ} 45'$ | | EA | $330^{\circ} 15'$ | $147^{\circ} 45'$ | (10) (b) Explain the loose needle method of traversing with a compass. (10) [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) Explain with sketches the temporary adjustments of a theodolite. (10) (b) A traverse was run with a prismatic compass and lengths and bearings of the lines observed are given below. Check whether or not the traverse closes. If not, balance it Bowditch's rule : | Line | Length (m) | Bearing | | :--- | :---: | :---: | | AB | 105.8 | N $40^{\circ} 45'$ W | | BC | 142.5 | N $51^{\circ} 30'$ E | | CD | 188.8 | S $48^{\circ} 15'$ E | | DA | 189.9 | S $76^{\circ} 45'$ W | (10) [20 marks]
Section B
- Q5. (a) Explain what is meant by the sensitiveness of a level tube. Describe how would you determine in the field sensitiveness of a level tube attached to a dumpy level. (10) (b) The following readings were taken with a level and a 4 m staff. Draw up a level book page and find the reduce levels by Height of instrument method : 0.683 (BM) (51.362 R.L.), 1.109, 1.838, 3.399, (3.877 and 0.451) C.P., 1.405, 1.896, 2.676, 3.478, (3.999 and 1.834) C.P., 0.649, 1.706.
