Questions
SECTION-A
- Q1. a. Clay has a liquid limit of 52% and shrinkage limit of 17%. If a specimen of this soil shrinks from a volume of $10000\text{ mm}^3$ at liquid limit to $6010\text{ mm}^3$ at shrinkage limit determine the specific gravity of soil grains. b. Differentiate between: 1. Liquidity index and consistency index 2. Flow index and toughness index. [15 marks]
- Q2. The results of sieve analysis performed on a soil are given below. The mass of dry sample taken for the test was $300\text{g}$. Draw the particle size distribution curve and determine the uniformity coefficient and coefficient of curvature and comment on the result. Sieve size: $4.75\text{mm}$ | $2.4\text{mm}$ | $1.2\text{mm}$ | $600\mu$ | $425\mu$ | $300\mu$ | $150\mu$ | $75\mu$ Mass of soil retained (g): $19.4$ | $24.96$ | $29.37$ | $36.88$ | $45.74$ | $47.99$ | $37.74$ | $57.92$ [15 marks]
- Q3. a. A layer of saturated clay $4\text{ m}$ thick and overlaid by sand of $5\text{ m}$ thickness and water level is $3\text{ m}$ below the ground level. Saturated unit weight of clay is $19\text{ kN/m}^3$ and sand is $20\text{ kN/m}^3$. Unit weight above water table is $16\text{ kN/m}^3$. Height of capillary saturation zone is $1\text{ m}$ above water table. Plot effective stress and pore water pressure graph. b. What are the major soil deposits of India? Explain their characteristics. [15 marks]
- Q4. a. What is a flow net? Describe its properties and applications also the different methods of its construction. b. In a falling head permeability test, the water level in the stand pipe dropped from 40 to $20\text{cm}$ in 1 hour. The diameter of the sample and stand pipe were $8\text{cm}$ and $0.5\text{cm}$ respectively, while the height of the sample was $9.5\text{cm}$. Determine the coefficient of permeability of soil in m/day [15 marks]
SECTION-B
- Q5. a. A total load of $900\text{kN}$ is uniformly distributed over a rectangular footing of size $2\text{m} \times 3\text{m}$. find the vertical stress at depth of $2.5\text{ m}$ below the footing at point C, under one corner, and D, under the centre. If another footing of size $1\text{m} \times 3\text{m}$ with a total load of $450\text{kN}$ is constructed adjoining the previous footing, what is the additional vertical stress at the point C at the same depth due to the construction of the second footing? b. Differentiate between triaxial and direct shear test. [15 marks]
- Q6. a. Explain the procedure for determination of coefficient of consolidation by square root of time fitting method. b. Describe standard proctor test and the modified proctor test. How would you decide the type of test to be conducted in the laboratory? [15 marks]
- Q7. a. A certain clay layer has a thickness of $5\text{m}$. After one year when the clay was $50\%$ consolidated $8\text{cm}$ of settlement had occurred. For a similar clay and loading conditions how much settlement would occur at the end of one year and 4 years, if the thickness of this new layer is $25\text{m}$? b. Discuss terzaghi's theory of consolidation. What are its limitations and why is this theory used despite its limitations. [15 marks]
- Q8. Derive expression for determination of vertical stress under uniformly loaded area. [15 marks]
