Section-I
Attempt at least two questions from this section.

Describe single column manometer with a neat sketch. (6) (c) A gauge indicates a pressure of $21.250 \text{ kN/m}^2$ vacuum. Compute the corresponding absolute pressure in (i) $\text{kN/m}^2$; (ii) meters of water. The local barometric pressure is $700 \text{ mm}$ of mercury ($S = 13.6$). (7) [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) State and prove Pascal's Law. Give some examples where this law is applied. (6) (b) A solid wood cylinder has a dia of $0.65 \text{ m}$ and a height of $1.30 \text{ m}$. The specific gravity of the wood is $0.6$. If the cylinder is placed vertically in oil having specific gravity $0.85$, will it be stable ? (7) (c) A circular plate $2 \text{ m}$ dia is immersed in water, its least and greatest depth below the free surface are $1 \text{ m}$ and $2.45 \text{ m}$ respectively. Find total pressure on one side of the plate, and the depth of the centre of pressure. (7) [20 marks]
- Q3. (a) Define the following terms : Bernoulli equation, Streak lines, Path lines, Stream function, Velocity Potential, Rotation and Vorticity. (8) (b) A velocity potential for a two-dimensional flow is given by the expression $\Phi = x^2 - y^2$. Determine : (i) Velocity components in the $x$ and $y$ directions. Check whether the velocity components satisfy the conditions of flow continuity and irrotationality. (12) (ii) Stream function and the flow rate between the stream lines $(1, 0)$ and $(1, 1)$. (iii) Also show that the stream lines and potential lines meet orthogonally at the point $(1, 1)$. [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) Derive an expression to measure rate of flow through a pipe using Orifice meter. State the merits of an Orifice meter over a Venturimeter. (10) (b) Differentiate between Sharp crested weir and Broad crested weir. (5) (c) Write a detailed note on Pitot tube. (5) [20 marks]
Section-II
Attempt at least two questions from this section.
- Q5. (a) State and explain the principle of dimensional homogeneity. Give two examples each of dimensionally homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations. (6) (b) A spillway design is to be studied by means of a geometrically similar model constructed to a scale of $1 : 20$. Neglecting viscous and surface tension effects, calculate : (i) the discharge in the model corresponding to a discharge of $1500 \text{ cumecs}$ in the prototype (ii) the velocity in the prototype corresponding to a velocity of $2 \text{ m/s}$ in the model (iii) the height of the hydraulic jump corresponding to a jump of $5 \text{ cm}$ in the model (iv) the energy dissipated in the prototype corresponding to $0.184 \text{ kW}$ in the model. (14) [20 marks]
- Q6. (a) How do you classify losses in pipes ? Derive the expression for head loss in a pipe due sudden expansion. (10) (b) A pipe of diameter $50 \text{ cm}$ and length $4000 \text{ m}$ connects two reservoirs A and B. The water surface levels in A and B are $40 \text{ m}$ and $30 \text{ m}$ above datum respectively. At a distance of $1000 \text{ m}$ along the pipe from its entrance at a point D, there is a branch pipe line of $40 \text{ cm}$ diameter and $1500 \text{ m}$ long through which water can be supplied to a third reservoir C. If the piezometric head at D is $33 \text{ m}$, find (i) the discharge into reservoirs B and C and (ii) the water surface level in reservoir C above the datum. Take Darcy-Weisbach $f$ for each pipe as $0.032$, neglect the minor losses and velocity head. (10) [20 marks]
- Q7. (a) Derive an expression for the efficiency of a jet striking a moving curved vane at centre of the vane. (10) (b) Drag force $F$ on a high speed aircraft depends on the velocity of flight $V$, the characteristic geometrical dimension of the aircraft $L$, the density $\rho$, viscosity $\mu$ and isentropic bulk modulus of elasticity $E_s$ of ambient air. Using Pi theorem, find out the independent dimensionless quantities which describe the phenomenon of drag on the aircraft. (10) [20 marks]
- Q8. (a) Differentiate between hydraulic gradient line and total energy line. (6) (b) A stationary curved plate deflects a $10 \text{ cm}$ diameter water jet through an angle of $120^\circ$ in the horizontal plane. Calculate the force required to hold the plate in position if the velocity of jet is $15 \text{ m/s}$. (7) (c) A rectangular weir $0.75 \text{ m}$ high and $1.5 \text{ m}$ long is to be used for discharging water from a tank under a head of $0.5 \text{ m}$. Estimate the discharge (i) when it is used as a suppressed weir (ii) when it is used as a contracted weir. Take $C_d = 0.66$. (7) [20 marks]
