Questions
Section A
- Q1. Design a suitable fillet weld to connect web plate to flange plate and flange plate to flange cover plate of a built up girder shown in figure. For the following data : Web plate : $1000\text{ mm} \times 12\text{ mm}$, Flange plate : $400\text{ mm} \times 20\text{ mm}$ Flange cover plate : $375 \times 16\text{ mm}$ Factored moment : $750\text{ KNm}$ Maximum factored shear force : $1500\text{ KN}$, Fillet weld : shop [15 marks]
- Q2. Design a splice for joining tension member sections $160 \times 10\text{ mm}$ and $250 \times 14\text{ mm}$. The member is subjected to factored tensile load of $300\text{ KN}$. Assume Fe 410 grade of steel. Provide $20\text{ mm}$ diameter bolts of grade $4.6$ for making the connections. [15 marks]
- Q3. A column section ISHB $300$ @ $618\text{ N/m}$ ($f_u = 410\text{ N/mm}^2$ and $f_y = 250\text{ N/mm}^2$) is to be spliced. The factored design loads are : Axial load over the column $= 450\text{ KN}$, Shear force $= 100\text{ KN}$, Bending moment $= 30\text{ KNm}$. (i) Design the splice plates and bolted connections using bolts of grade $4.6$. (ii) Design HSFG bolts and revise the splice plate size if possible. [15 marks]
- Q4. (i) Strength and ductility of steel are equally important for steel structures. How are these improved ? If strength is to be increased while retaining the desired ductility of steel, what is done ? (ii) What are the defects that may originate while rolling steel section ? [15 marks]
Section B
- Q5. A conference hall $8\text{ m} \times 18\text{ m}$ is provided with $120\text{ mm}$ RCC slab over rolled steel beams spaced $3\text{ m}$ c/c. A wearing coat of $100\text{ mm}$ average thickness is provided over roof. Design the beam section, if the compression flange of beam is laterally supported throughout. [15 marks]
- Q6. Design the most critical section of welded plate girder of constant depth to carry a superimposed load of $100\text{ KN/m}$ in addition to its self weight over a span of $20\text{ m}$ with two equal overhangs of $3\text{ m}$ on each side, thus making total length of girder $26\text{ m}$. Design the following : (a) Cross-section (b) Curtailment (c) End bearing stiffener (d) Intermediate stiffener. [15 marks]
- Q7. Design a simply supported gantry girder to be used in an industrial building for the following data : Crane capacity $= 100\text{ KN}$, Weight of crab $= 35\text{ KN}$, Weight of crane (excluding crab) $= 160\text{ KN}$, Minimum clearance between crane hook and gantry girder is $1\text{ m}$, Wheel base $= 3\text{ m}$, Distance between c/c of gantries $= 20\text{ m}$, Distance between c/c of gantry columns $= 6\text{ m}$, Crane type = M.O.T. [15 marks]
- Q8. A column section ISHB $350$ @ $661.2\text{ N/m}$ carries a factored axial compressive load of $1650\text{ KN}$ and factored bending moment of $90\text{ KNm}$. Design the base plate and its connections, if the factored bending moment is increased to $180\text{ KNm}$ redesign the base and connections. Assume concrete pedestal of M20. [15 marks]
