Questions
UNIT - I
- Q1. A steel two hinged circular arch rib has a span of 30m and a rise of 3m. The rib section is uniform throughout with an overall depth of 0.7m. Neglecting all effects except those due to bending, find from first principles, the bending stress at the crown due to a temperature change of 30K. Take $E = 2 \times 10^5 \text{ N/mm}^2$ and $\alpha = 11 \times 10^{-8} \text{ per } \text{K}$. [20 marks]
- Q2. A suspension bridge cable hangs between two points A and B separate horizontally by 120m and with A 20m above B. The lowest point in the cable is 4m below B. The cable supports a stiffening girder which is hinged vertically below A, B and the lowest point in the cable. find the position and magnitude of the largest bending moment which a point load of 10 KN can induce in the girder together with the position of the load. [20 marks]
UNIT - II
- Q3. Draw the influence line diagram for the forces in the member $L_1U_2, U_2L_3, U_3L_3, L_1L_2 \text{ and } L_2L_3$ of the through type bridge truss as shown in fig. 1. [20 marks]
- Q4. A two span beam ACDE has internal hinge at B and overhanging part DE such that spans $AB = BC = 2\text{m}, CD = DE = 4\text{m}$. Using Muller - Breslau influence theorem draw influence lines for $R_A, R_B, R_C, R_D, M_C, M_G, F_G$. [20 marks]
UNIT - III
- Q5. A beam ABC supported on a column BD is loaded as shown in fig. 2. Analyze the frame, by using Slope Deflection Method and Draw the Bending Moment Diagram. [20 marks]
- Q6. A beam ABCD is simply supported at its end A and D over a span of 30 meters. It is made up of three portions AB, BC and CD each 10m in length. The moments of inertia of the section of these portions are I, 2I and 3I respectively, where $I = 2 \times 10^{10} \text{ mm}^4$. The beam carries a point load of 300 KN at C Neglecting the weight of the beam calculate the slopes and deflection at A, B, C and D. Take $E = 200 \text{ KN/mm}^2$. [20 marks]
UNIT - IV
- Q7. Find the plastic moment required for the continuous beam of uniform section shown in fig 3 due to collapse loading shown. [20 marks]
- Q8. a) Differentiate between force method and stiffness method? [5 marks]
- Q8. b) Analyze the continuous beam as shown in fig. 4 by Using force Method and displacement method. [15 marks]
