Questions
Unit I
- Q1. (a) What is kinematic chain ? Explain the significance of degree of freedom of a kinematic chain when it functions as a mechanism, give examples. (b) Sketch and explain the various inversions of a slider crank chain.
- Q2. (a) What is Coriolis component of acceleration. Derive an expression for the magnitude and direction of Coriolis component of acceleration. (b) Draw the velocity and acceleration diagram for four bar chain mechanism. Also discuss applications of slider crank mechanism.
Unit II
- Q3. (a) Construct the profile of a cam to suit the following specifications : Cam shaft diameter = 40 mm; least radius of cam = 25 mm; diameter of roller = 25 mm; angle of lift = 120°; angle of fall = 150°; lift of follower = 40 mm; number of pauses are two of equal interval between motions. During the lift, the motion is S.H.M. During the fall the motion is uniform acceleration and deceleration. The speed of the cam shaft is uniform. The line of the stroke of the follower is off-set 12.5 mm from the centre of the cam. (b) Classify the followers according to surface in contact, motion of follower and path of motion of follower?
- Q4. A Porter governor has all four arms 250 mm long. The upper arms are attached on the axis of rotation and the lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 30 mm from the axis. The mass of each ball is 5 kg and the sleeve has a mass of 50 kg. The extreme radii of rotation are 150 mm and 200 mm. Determine the range of speed of the governor.
Unit III
- Q5. (a) Derive an expression for the ratio of driving tensions in the flat belt. Also explain the condition of maximum power transmission. (b) Two pulleys are 350 mm diameter and other 100 mm diameter are on parallel shaft 1.75 m apart connected by cross belts. Find length of belt required and angle of contact between belt and each pulley.
- Q6. A conical friction clutch is used to transmit 90 kW at 1500 rpm. The semi-cone angle is 20° and coefficient of friction is 0.2. If the mean diameter of the bearing surface is 375 mm and the intensity of the normal pressure is not to exceed 0.25 N/mm², find the dimensions of the conical bearing surface and the axial load required.
Unit IV
- Q7. (a) What is a gear drive ? Also explain its advantages and disadvantages. A single reduction gear of 120 kW with a pinion 250 mm pitch circle diameter and speed 650 rpm is supported in bearing on either side. Calculate the total load due to the power transmitted the pressure angle being 20°. (b) A pair of spur gear with 14 and 21 teeth are of involute profile and pressure angle 16°. Find the maximum addenda on the pinion and gear wheel to avoid interference if the module is 6 mm. Also find the maximum velocity of sliding on the other side of the pitch point if the pinion starts at 300 rpm.
- Q8. Write short notes on : (a) Compound Gear Train (b) Velocity ratio and train value (c) Reverted gear train (d) Epicyclic Gear Train.
