Questions
UNIT-I
- Q1. a Two rollers of the same diameter are supported by an inclined plane and a vertical wall as shown in figure given below. The upper and lower rollers are respectively 200N and 250N in weight. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the reactions induced at the points of support A, B, C and D. [10 marks]
- Q1. b State and Prove: i. Lami's theorem ii. Varignon's theorem [10 marks]
- Q2. a A heavy wheel of weight $W$ and radius $r$ is to be dragged over an obstacle of height $h$ by a horizontal force applied to centre of wheel. Show the horizontal force should be at least $W \frac{\sqrt{2rh-h^2}}{r-h}$. [10 marks]
- Q2. b Four coplanar forces of magnitude 40N, 30N, 20N and 50N act in various directions as shown. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force. [10 marks]
UNIT- II
- Q3. a State and prove parallel axis and perpendicular axis theorem of moment of inertia [10 marks]
- Q3. b Determine the moment of inertia of the plane section as shown in figure about horizontal and vertical centroidal axis. [10 marks]
- Q4. Find the magnitude and nature of all the forces transmitted by each member of the plane truss as shown and ascertain whether it is in tension or compression. [20 marks]
UNIT-III
- Q5. a A bar of PQ of weight $W$ is supported as shown in fig and a force $F$ is acting on the bar, Using the principle of virtual work, derive an expression in terms of $W$ and $F$ for the effort $R$ applied at $Q$ for equilibrium. Friction may be neglected. Take $W=500N, F=700N, \theta=60^{\circ}$ [10 marks]
- Q5. b Explain the following: 1. Principal of virtual work. 2. D'Alembert's principle 3. Parallelogram law of forces [10 marks]
- Q6. a Find the support reactions in the following beam as shown in fig. [10 marks]
- Q6. b Explain the different types of horizontal members which are generally placed on different supports. Also find the reactions. [10 marks]
UNIT-IV
- Q7. a The following observations were made during a tensile test on mild steel specimen 40mm in diameter and 200mm long. Elongation with 40kN load (within limit of proportionality) = 0.0304mm Yield load = 161kN Maximum load = 242 kN Length of the specimen of the fracture = 249kN Determine : 1. Young's modulus of elasticity 2. Yield point stress 3. Ultimate stress 4. Percentage elongation [10 marks]
- Q7. b Derive the relation between $E$, $C$ and $K$. [10 marks]
- Q8. a Explain the concept of strain energy and discuss the various stresses due to different types of loads. [10 marks]
- Q8. b A wagon weighing 35kN is attached to a wire-rope and moving down an incline at speed of 3.6km/hour when the rope jams and the wagon is suddenly brought to rest. If the length of the rope is 60 meters at the time of sudden stoppage, calculate the maximum instantaneous stress and maximum instantaneous elongation produced. Diameter of rope = 300mm. $E=200GN/m^2$ [10 marks]
