Questions
Unit-I
- Q1. 1. (a) State and prove the second theorem of Castigliano. 10 (b) A mild steel bar $100\text{ mm}$ diameter is bent as shown in fig. It is fixed horizontally at $A$ and a load of $500\text{ N}$ hangs at $D$. Draw the bending moment diagram for the parts $AB$, $BC$ and $CD$ indicating the maximum values. Find the maximum bending stress. Find the deflection at $D$. Take $E = 2 \times 10^5\text{ N/mm}^2$. 10 [20 marks]
- Q2. 2. Find the forces in the members of the redundant frame by using Castigliano second theorem as shown in fig. under the action of the forces shown. Cross-sectional area of each bar is $1000\text{ mm}^2$ and $E = 2 \times 10^5\text{ N/mm}^2$. 20 [20 marks]
Unit-II
- Q3. 3. A fixed beam $6\text{ m}$ span carries a uniformly distributed load of $20\text{ kN/m}$ over the left-hand half of the span. Calculate the support moments. 20 [20 marks]
- Q4. 4. By using three moment theorem analyze the beam as shown in the fig. below and also draw SFD ad BMD for the beam. 20 [20 marks]
Unit-III
- Q5. 5. By using moment distribution method, determine the support moments for the continuous beam if the support $B$ sinks by $2.5\text{ mm}$. For all the members $I = 3.50 \times 10^7\text{ mm}^4$, $E = 200\text{ kN/mm}^2$ and also draw BMD. 20 [20 marks]
- Q6. 6. By using slope deflection method analyse the beam loaded as shown in fig. below. The moment of inertia of the span section are $1.5\text{ I}$ for $AB$ and $I$ for $BC$. Draw B.M. and S.F. diagrams. 20 [20 marks]
Unit-IV
- Q7. 7. Two-point loads of $4\text{ kN}$ and $6\text{ kN}$ spaced at $6\text{ m}$ apart cross a girder of $16\text{ m}$ span, the $4\text{ kN}$ load leading from left to right. Construct the maximum S.F. and B.M. diagrams stating the absolute maximum values. 20 [20 marks]
- Q8. 8. Draw the influence lines for a reaction at supports $A$, $B$, $C$ and bending moment at support $B$ for the beam shown in fig. below. There is hinge provided at $D$. Find their maximum values when a travelling load of $60\text{ kN}$ per meter may cover any part of the span : 20 [20 marks]
