Questions
Section A
Select at least two questions from this section.
- Q1. A copper rod of 40 mm diameter is surrounded tightly by a cast iron tube of 80 mm external diameter, the ends being firmly fastened together. When put to a compressive load of 30 kN, what load will be shared by each ? Also determine the amount by which the compound bar shortens if it is 2 m long. Take : $E_{C.I} = 175 \text{ GN/m}^2$, $E_C = 75 \text{ GN/m}^2$ [20 marks]
- Q2. An element in a stressed material has tensile stress of $500 \text{ MN/m}^2$ and a compressive stress of $350 \text{ MN/m}^2$ acting on two mutually perpendicular planes and equal shear of $100 \text{ MN/m}^2$ on these planes. Find the principal stresses and position of the principal planes. Find also the maximum shearing stress and the direction of their planes. [20 marks]
- Q3. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the loaded overhanging beam shown in figure. Also determine the point of contraflexure. [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) A solid Aluminium shaft 1 m long and of 50 mm diameter is to be replaced by a hollow steel hollow shaft of the same length and same outside diameter, so that the shaft could carry the same torque and has the same angle of twist. What must be the inner diameter of the hollow shaft ? Take rigidity modulus for Aluminium and steel as 28 GPa and 85 GPa respectively. [12 marks]
- Q4. (b) A solid shaft of 120 mm diameter is required to transmit 200 kW at 100 r.p.m. If the angle of twist is not to exceed $2^\circ$, find the length of the shaft. Take rigidity modulus as 90 GPa. [8 marks]
Section B
Select at least two questions from this section.
- Q5. (a) A thick metallic cylindrical shell of 160 mm internal diameter is required to withstand an internal pressure of $40 \text{ N/mm}^2$. Find the necessary thickness of the shell, if the permissible tensile stress in the section is $120 \text{ N/mm}^2$? [14 marks]
- Q5. (b) Differentiate between a thin and thick cylinder. [6 marks]
- Q6. Explain the theorem of three moments. Prove the Clapeyron's theorem of three moments. [20 marks]
- Q7. What do you understand by the term "theories of failure". Explain Haigh's theory in detail. [20 marks]
- Q8. Write short notes on (any two) : (a) Bending stress (b) St. Venant's theory (c) Conjugate Beam. [20 marks]
