Questions
Section-A
- Q1. (a) Given the following data, calculate the population at the end of next three decades by decrease rate method : | YEAR | 1940 | 1950 | 1960 | 1970 | |---|---|---|---|---| | Population | 80,000 | 1,20,000 | 1,68,000 | 2,28,580 | (b) Write a short note on provision for 'fire demand' in water supply. [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) Describe, with the help of sketches, various types of tube-wells. (b) Explain with the help of neat sketch any two types of joints used in water supply pipes. [20 marks]
- Q3. (a) Explain the following : (i) Intermittent supply and continuous supply (ii) Metered supply and non-metered supply (b) A large service reservoir supplies water to two colonies as under : Colony A : Population 12,000 & Colony B : Population 60,000. Determine : (i) the size of the supply conduits and (ii) the hydraulic gradient at which the pipe line should be laid. Assume average daily water consumption as 200 litres/capital/day. [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) What is meant by 'water hammer', and how is it produced in pipes conveying water under pressure ? What precautions should be taken and arrangements made to resist its effects. (b) What is meant by the variation in rate of demand ? State the factors which affect the rate of demand. [20 marks]
Section-B
- Q5. (a) Two primary settling basings are 25 m in diameter with 2.5 m side water depth. Single effluent weirs are located on the peripheries of the tanks. For a water flow of 30000 cubic meter/day, calculate : (i) surface area and volume (ii) overflow rate in cubic meter/sq m/day (iii) detention time, in hours. (b) Explain in brief various forms of chlorination. [20 marks]
- Q6. (a) Determine the maximum displacement velocity, without the fear of settled particles to be lifted up and the ratio of length to depth of the settling unit for the following particles : (i) alum floc having $S_s = 1.1$ and diameter = $0.1$ cm, and (ii) anthracite coal dust having $S_s = 1.5$ and diameter = $0.01$ cm. Assume a Weisbach-Darcy friction factor $f = 0.025$ and temperature of $20^{\circ}\text{C}$. (b) Describe, with the help of neat sketch, a slow sand filter. Explain its working. [20 marks]
- Q7. (a) Classify various types of filters. Differentiate between the slow sand and rapid sand gravity filter. Compare the two types of the filters in a tabular form. (b) Explain with help of neat sketches various methods of distribution of water. [20 marks]
- Q8. Explain the following : (i) Hydraulic gradient (ii) Treatment of sea water (iii) Sludge removal (iv) Flocculation [20 marks]
