Questions
Section - I
- Q1. (a) What is meant by the term 'per capita demand'? How is it estimated? Discuss the factors that influence per capita demand. (10) (b) Explain with the help of sketches various types of joints used in pipes. (10) [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) Water has to be supplied to a town with one lakh population at the rate of 150 litres per capita per day from a river, 1.8 km away. The difference in elevation between the lowest water level in a sump and service reservoir is 36 meters. Determine the size and the head loss in the supply main. Assume suitable data where necessary. What do you understand by corrosion in pipes? What are the reasons of corrosion? What are the remedial measures? (10) (b) What is an 'intake structure'? Enumerate the various types of intake, and discuss them in details. (10) [20 marks]
- Q3. (a) What do you understand by corrosion in pipes? What are the reasons of corrosion? What are the remedial measures? (10) (b) What are springs, and how are they formed. Discuss briefly the various types of springs. (10) [20 marks]
- Q4. (a) The population figures of a town from census record are given in table. Find the population after three decades by using arithmetic increase method. (10) | Year | 1951 | 1961 | 1971 | 1981 | |---|---|---|---|---| | Population | 100000 | 109000 | 116600 | 128200 | (b) Write short notes on the following: i) Service fittings ii) Fire hydrants (10) [20 marks]
Section - II
- Q5. (a) Design a coagulation sedimentation tank to treat 10 million litres of water per day. Assume suitable data where necessary. (10) (b) Explain briefly the activated carbon treatment. (10) [20 marks]
- Q6. (a) Describe in brief various tests conducted for physical examination of water. (10) (b) A service reservoir receives water from an impounding reservoir, distant 40 km. The difference in levels between the water levels of these reservoir is 120 m. The two reservoirs were originally connected by a single pipe line designed to carry a maximum daily requirement of 18 million litres per day. It is now desired to increase the supply to 25 million litres per day, by laying another pipe line of the same diameter along side the first one, in a certain required length and cross - connecting the two. Using Hazen - William equation (C=120), determine (i) the diameter of the pipe and (ii) the length of second pipe required to be laid. (10) [20 marks]
- Q7. (a) Design a rapid sand filter for a population of 5 million litres per day of supply with all its principal components. (12) (b) Explain with sketches grid iron and ring system of distribution system. (8) [20 marks]
- Q8. Write short notes on : i) Hydraulic gradient ii) Zoning of areas iii) Service reservoir iv) Super chlorination (20) [20 marks]
