Questions
Unit I
- Q1. The following is the ultimate analysis of a sample of petrol by weight : Carbon 85 percent, Hydrogen 15 percent. Calculate the ratio of air to petrol consumption by weight if the volumetric analysis of the dry exhaust gas is : $\text{CO}_2 = 11.5$ percent; $\text{CO} = 1.2$ percent; $\text{O}_2 = 0.9$ percent and $\text{N}_2 = 86$ percent. Also find percentage excess air. [20 marks]
- Q2. (a) Explain different types of fuels. (b) Explain the terms Stoichiometric A/F ratio, Theoretical air and excess air, Mixture strength. [20 marks]
Unit II
- Q3. What is a binary vapour cycle ? Show that for a binary vapour cycle having working fluids as mercury and steam, overall efficiency is given by : $$\eta = \eta_{\text{Hg}} + \eta_s - \eta_{\text{Hg}}\eta_s .$$ [20 marks]
- Q4. Explain a Rankine cycle. How boiler pressure and condenser pressure varies the performance of a Rankine cycle. [20 marks]
Unit III
- Q5. Explain Lamont and Cochran Boiler with neat sketches. [20 marks]
- Q6. Explain the terms : Superheater, Airpreheater and Economiser with neat sketches. [20 marks]
Unit IV
- Q7. Dry saturated steam enters a steam nozzle at a pressure of 15 bar and is discharged at a pressure of 2.9 bar. If dryness fraction of discharge steam is 0.96, what will be the final velocity of steam ? Neglect initial velocity of steam. [20 marks]
- Q8. The velocity of steam exiting the nozzle of the impulse stage of a turbine is 400 m/s. The blades operate close to the maximum blading efficiency. The nozzle angle is $20^{\circ}$. Considering equiangular blades and neglecting blade friction, calculate for a steam flow of 0.6 kg/s, the diagram power and the diagram efficiency. [20 marks]
