The travelers who can compare from experience knows that Indian trains are not the best in Asia especially inside; that they are relatively unpunctual; that the rail system, not merely the trains, provides less service and comfort than most European railways.

It is true that some "specials" in the country are no better than the local trains except in cleanliness. There are some startling exceptions; Swedish second-class travel is as good as Indian first class. Indian Railway suffers from more handicaps than most other railways, such as being hamstrung by Government, by the nightmares of poor labour relations, vandalism, staff carelessness and a probable loss from ticket frauds and thefts. A serious handicap is the nine region administration system unwieldy when compare with the strong centralized control of other national railways.

But Indians remain emotionally involved with their trains. A fare increase is a wound, the closure of line an amputation; the scrapping of a favourite train a bereavement. We have become a nation of travel neurotics.

All continental carriages have litter receptacles for each row of seats. Even Italian country trains, long regarded as notoriously dirty, are tidy. I inspected 20 in Milan and Genoa, at the end of their journeys, and found all the litter in the bins provided.

An ergonomist agrees that the railway environment is poor and says the designers must be considered with 'a range of rail users' and not with a mathematically defined passenger. A railway architect conceded the basic need to improve convenience' wherever it could woo the customer to use rail transport. In future, he says, the passenger must come first.
